Columbia Dance Center Musicians

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the December 10th, 2009
My intended musical outing tonight was supposed to be Anaphora at
the Curtiss Theater in the Fine Arts Building, but due to a fine dinner
of the last leftover turkey ala king, I fell asleep until it was too late to get
there by 7pm. But there was a plan “B”. That would be attending
Columbia College’s Dance Center Accompanists Concert at 8pm.

This free concert at 1306 S Michigan was attended by about 30 dance
center devotees. The music was programmed as follows:

Anna Shuba performed a Vivaldi piece on piano.

Then electric guitarist Michael Kirkpatrick played two pieces by
Scriabin and Chopin.

The last set before intermission was by mother/daughter duo of
Alla and Sonya Dekhyyar. They performed some Eastern European
folk songs and a couple of cabaret ditties. Very entertaining.

After intermission the place got lively.

The first set was performed by Eastern Blok, which included
Goran Ivanovic on guitar. We heard sax, drums, bass and guitar
wailing Eastern European melodies up the walls. But I don’t know
what dances this music might’ve accompanied.

The second set was all rock and roll by District 97. The vocals by
Leslie Hunt and electric cello by Katinka Kleijn made it a great
conclusion to the evening.
